What feedback means when your product keeps changing
SaaS teams collect feedback and then do something specific to their situation: they keep shipping. By the time enough responses come in to say anything meaningful, the feature those responses are about may have changed. Sometimes it no longer exists at all.
Most feedback advice doesn't account for this. It treats the product as a constant -- a hotel, a restaurant, a service that changes slowly or not at all. Feedback from six weeks ago describes roughly the same thing as today's version. In a software product that ships weekly, it might not.
The gap matters because context collapses quickly. A user who said "the dashboard is confusing" in February was describing a specific version of that dashboard. If you redesigned it in March, that response isn't evidence that your new dashboard is confusing -- it's evidence that an old one was. Acting on it now might mean fixing something already fixed, while the actual problem sits somewhere else.
The usual instinct is to discard anything past a certain age. If it's more than a few months old, skip it. Reasonable as a rough rule, but it throws away something useful: a complaint that's been appearing for six months tells you something that a complaint from last week doesn't. This problem predated whatever you already tried, and persisted through it. That's worth knowing.
Being honest about what the feedback is describing -- and what version of the product it's tied to -- is harder than it sounds, because most teams don't think of their product as having versions in any formal sense. Things just change. Features get adjusted without a clean before-and-after. Grouping responses by a product event rather than a calendar date helps: "before the checkout redesign" tells you something "February" doesn't -- whether the responses you're reading are still relevant to something that still exists.
The other problem is that continuous shipping creates continuous noise. Every release generates a signal, but it might be about the change, it might be unrelated, it might be a problem from two releases ago that people only noticed now. Separating signal from release noise is slow, and it's easy to give up and read everything as one undifferentiated mass.
The responses that tend to stay consistent across versions are usually about fundamentals: whether the product makes sense on arrival, whether the core workflow holds up. These don't shift dramatically between releases. The texture changes more -- the language people use to describe a problem, the feature names they get stuck on, the things they expected to find and didn't. If you're reading carefully over time, you notice when those things shift.
The best time to ask tends to be tied to a specific event rather than a rolling schedule. Right after signup, while expectations are still fresh -- what you ask at that moment matters differently from what you ask a month later. When engagement starts to drop. When you've shipped something significant enough that you'd expect a reaction.
Users who cancel without saying why are almost always responding to something specific -- the question is whether it was the last thing you shipped or something that had been building for months. Having a rough sense of that timeline usually tells you which.
